When I walk through Italian cities, I look at them first of all through the eyes of Fellini if it is Rome, Visconti in Venice, Sorrentino in Naples, Zeffirelli in Florence, Antonioni in Milan. This legacy is so powerful that everywhere I go I try to look for the frozen scenes of the great directors — and the thing is, they invented nothing: they filmed what they saw.

That is why I don’t try to copy. I photograph what I see, and the aesthetic is shaped by cultural background. Antiquity, the Renaissance, the Baroque, Neorealism — these are not chapters in the history of art; they are what forms the cultural code of Italians, even those whose parents are of immigrant origin. After all, Rome — the greatest city in the history of Western civilization — was a city of migrants, and nationality was not tied to ethnic origin. And if we keep this in mind, all the images of history become alive for us — and we need only set the exposure correctly, choose the angle, and press the button.
