In this town, it feels as though not just time, but life itself has come to a standstill. Visually, the town is quite picturesque, at times reminiscent of the impoverished regions of Asia or Africa that photographers are so fond of capturing. But for me personally, the destruction of the authentic historical Russia is a deep, personal tragedy. I have been to Torzhok many times, and with every visit, I notice new losses. With rare exceptions, this is the fate of many small towns in Russia, and in this sense, Torzhok’s example is indicative. Yet, it possesses its own special, inimitable magic. My story about the town is not a tourist attraction, nor is it a hollow street-photography exercise; rather, it is a narrative about its people in the context of fleeting time.
